The main idea is what a a writing piece is about and can be found aywhere in the writing. Topic sentences introduce a topic or idea, and are always found in the beginning of a paragraph.
It can be a sentence anywhere in the writing. Sometimes you need to take little pieces of each paragraph to find the main idea.
